Best Time to Visit Zhangjiajie

Zhangjiajie, located in the north middle latitude, has distinct four seasons and provides comfortable weather for visitors. Temperatures there rarely exceed 35 °C (95 °F) or fall below 0 °C (32 °F). The average temperature is around 16 °C. The hottest days fall in July, with the average temperature of about 32 °C, and the coldest days fall in January, with the average temperature of about 4.3 °C. And rainfall in Zhangjiajie is fairly well distributed throughout the year. When rain and foggy appear, the quartz-sandstone pillars, forest and streams in Zhangjiajie are all covered with mist, forming a magical wonderland.

Spring in Zhangjiajie

Zhangjiajie has a short spring from late March to early May. Spring is a pleasant season full of vigor. The weather is getting warmer during this period time, with temperatures ranging from 15°C (59°F) to 25°C (77°F). And the mountains and parks are going to dress up with green trees and colorful flowers. When late spring comes, the best time of visiting Zhangjiajie is coming too!

Summer in Zhangjiajie

Summer is relatively long, lasting from late May or early June to August. Though it is hot in the downtown area of Zhangjiajie, with an average temperature ranges from 28°C (82°F) to 33°C (91°F), you will feel extremely pleasant under the protection of forests of the city’s scenic areas. There are also many rainy days in summer. The mountainous scenery is otherworldly during 1 or 2 hours after the rain. The lower part of the pillars and hills will be hidden in the mist, so you could encounter with the mysterious Hallelujah Mountains of Pandora in the world-famous film Avatar. However, if the rain is too heavy, the fog will hide the scenery without your notice.

T-shirt, shorts, a light coat, umbrellas, sun cream and sunglasses.

Tianzi Mountain of Wulingyuan Scenic Area is the top recommended, which can provide you the most stunning scenery of Hallelujah Mountains in misty. And never forget to indulge yourselves inside (Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is one part of Wulingyuan) and Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon. Yellow Dragon Cave and Baofeng Lake are also great tourist sites to kill the heat and date with nature. You can get the brightest scenery in the sunny summer days and have many opportunities to say hello to the wild animals there. However, try to avoid the heavy rain days, because it may be dangerous to climb the mountains.

Autumn in Zhangjiajie

The weather is getting cooler after the late summer and then the pleasant autumn is coming. The average temperature falls gradually from 23°C to12°C during this season. Some of leaves are going to turn red or brown. But the forest is still in green, because most of the trees have evergreen leaves. There are still many rainy days in October. However, you couldn’t meet that many heavy rainy days as summer. Besides, autumn is not only for sightseeing, but also a great chance to taste delicious local fruits like kiwi, pear, Chinese chestnut, and lychee.

What to Wear

Seasonal Activities

Get a bird view of canyon and forest of Zhangjiajie on the Glass Bridge is a good choice. Also, you can spend 2-3 days to appreciate the streams, hills, and forests of Wulingyuan Scenic Area (Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is part of Wulingyuan). Ride a cable car to the Tianmen Cave and enjoy the fog flowing through the cave is also recommended.

Winter in Zhangjiajie

Zhangjiajie is cold and dry in winter. The average temperature in winter there is 4 °C (40 °F), and the coldest time is February. Sometimes it gets very windy and occasionally snows lightly. When snow appears, the scenery in its mountains, parks and canyon show you different kind of beauty - instead of dressing in green, the hills will dress up in white and brown (the color of the stones). Most tourists wouldn't like to vist Zhangjiajie in this cold season. Therefore, you will encounter with the fewest people in the year if you go. Besides, the local hotels and restaurants cut their prices by an average of 30 percent in winter.

What to Wear

Thick and warm clothes to protect yourself from the cold weather and catching a cold, such as, down jacket, wind coat, overcoat and sweater, antiskid shoes.

Though winter is cold, almost all the cable cars, and elevators runs regularly during this period. The scenic spots won't be closed too. If you love snows and love hiking during snowy days, you could visit Zhangjiajie National Forest Park or Grand Canyon.
