Best Time to Visit Dali

Dali in Yunnan Province of China has a subtropical highland climate, with short, mild, dry winters, and warm, rainy summers because of its low latitude and high elevation. In summer, a majority of the days features some rainfall, and daytime temperatures rise to 24 °C (75 °F). In winter, frost may occur but the days generally warm up to 15 °C (59 °F) or more. Main rainfall comes from June to October. It can get rather windy in autumn and winter, mainly in Xiaguan (Dali New City).

Temperature difference is small in a year; it’s not a bad idea to take a Dali tour at any time of a year. But the best time to visit Dali is from March to June when springtime is in full swing, and there are most festivals for Bai People between March and April. You’ll see best view and taste local customs and culture. As the old song singing-what a beautiful Dali in March; the March is counted by lunar calendar and probably is April by Gregorian calendar.

What is the climate like in Dali?

Dali Ancient Town

It has a relatively temperate climate year round, with no extremes in summer or in winter. The temperature ranges from 18 °C (64 °F) to 25 °C (77 °F) in summer and from 4 °C (39 °F) to 17 °C (62 °F) in winter on average.

The daily temperature variation tends to be greater than the seasonal variation in temperature, which calls for layered clothing, or jackets and sweaters early in the morning and again during the evening.

Most rainfall is seen from June to October. These months should be avoided if you don't like too much rain.

Given that the city is located on a flat plateau between a mountain range (Can Mountain to the west) and a large lake (Erhai Lake to the east), creating a natural wind tunnel, Dali gets a great deal of wind, year round. Dali is nicknamed "Windy City".
